STORRS, CONN -- The Providence College men’s and women’s swimming team competed in the Husky Open, hosted by the University of Connecticut on Saturday, Feb. 16. The Friars competed against UConn, Central Connecticut, Boston College, Keene State, Bryant University, the University of Rhode Island and Assumption College. The Husky Open was not scored.
Sophomore Justin Tse (Framingham, Mass.) collected a third-place finish in the 500y freestyle event, finishing the race in 4:58.12. Junior Kenny Savage (Basking Ridge, N.J.) finished the 200y backstroke in 2:04.62, placing him third overall. Senior Sam Schlich (Massepequa, N.Y.) placed seventh in the 50y freestyle (25.14), while sophomore Gabriela Mayuri (West Hartford, Conn.) took fifth place in the 200y butterfly, finishing in 2:16.02.
Freshman Devon Cameron (Bradford, Mass.) took second place in the 1650y freestyle, touching the wall in 18:08.41. Cameron’s time qualified her for the BIG EAST Championships where she will compete in the 1650y freestyle and the 500y freestyle.
29 Friars will compete in the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships. The Championships will run from Wednesday, February 27 through Saturday, March 2. The events will be held at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
