PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The North Dakota Fighting Sioux advanced to the championship game of the 2000 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Frozen Four by virtue of to a 2-0 victory over Maine in the first semifinal on Thursday in Providence, RI. Second period goals by Bryan Lundbohm and Kevin Spiewak proved to be enough for the Fighting Sioux, who advance to the championship game for the first time since 1997, which was the last time the Sioux captured the NCAA title. The UND win denies Maine's bid to be the first team to capture back-to-back championships since Boston University accomplished the feat in 1971 and 1972.

The two teams were scoreless after one and that held up well into the second period. After Maine's Peter Metcalf was assessed a slashing penalty at the 7:26 mark, Aaron Schneekloth received a pass off of Lundbohm's faceoff, and fed a streaking Lundbohm with a pass from the left side. Lundbohm's shot beat Black Bear goalie Matt Yeats high on the blocker side for the 1-0 lead.

Exactly five minutes later, with Sioux defenseman Mike Commodore in the box for a slashing infraction, freshman Jason Noterman fed Spiewak from the left side, skated in on Yeats, and buried a shot from the bottom of the face-off circle that beat Yeats to his left for the shorthanded tally. The Black bear netminder finished the afternoon with 32 saves, while his Sioux counterpart Karl Goehring earned the shutout with 30 stops. North Dakota advances to the championship with a 30-8-5 mark on the season, while Maine completes its 1999-2000 campaign with a 27-8-5 overall record. UND now awaits the winner of the St. Lawrence-Boston College matchup, scheduled for Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Saturday evening's championship game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Providence Civic Center.
