Providence, Rhode Island

Providence, one of America's first cities, is rich in history, culture, and tradition. The city was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, who through his position on religious liberty, became known as the Independent Man. He named the city in "commemoration of God's Providence." His sense of individual initiative and love of liberty has become the spirit of our city. This same initiative and courage built a thriving colony and a bustling commercial economy in the days when Yankee Clippers were known as far away as China.

The city later became the cradle of the American Industrial Revolution with a strong tradition of commerce and manufacturing. With this newly-created wealth and an abundance of employment opportunities, Providence grew into a thriving cosmopolitan center.

Today, Providence enjoys a reputation as one of America's fastest growing cities. It has a population of more than 150,000 people. In its February, 1989 issue, Newsweek magazine called Providence one of the top ten "hot cities" in the country, a rating based on overall livability, affordable housing, and job opportunities.

Providence has a great deal to offer, including museums, theaters, a new convention center, historic sites, colleges and universities, an award-winning zoo, a new, outdoor skating center, and world class dining. The city is easily accessible, with the convenience of bus and train stations, and an recently renovated T.F. Greene Airport nearby. Luxury hotel accommodations are available in the local vicinity, and exploration within the city on the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) provides frequent bus service to most major activities and offerings of the city and state.

Providence is a city rich in history and culture. Between the excitement of the sporting events, the elegance of Federal Hill, and the city's planned activities, there is something for everyone in Providence.
