Softball Splits Doubleheader Against UConn

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team split a doubleheader against BIG EAST foe UConn on Saturday (March 18) at Glay Field. Providence claimed game one, 3-2, before falling to the Huskies in game two, 11-3. The Friars are now 9-13 overall and 2-4 in BIG EAST play in the 2023 season.
GAME ONE NOTES
- The teams combined for just four hits over the course of the game, none until the third inning.
- Freshman Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.). got the Friars on the board at 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-out, RBI single.
- In the top of the fifth inning, UConn responded with a pair of runs off a sacrifice fly and an error to score two runs and make it 2-1 Huskies.
- Providence regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J) ripped a double to center field, scoring Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.) and Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) to give Providence a 3-2 lead.
- Freshman Riley Quirk (Holden, Mass.) closed the door in the seventh, finishing off the complete game and earning her first NCAA win.
GAME TWO NOTES
- UConn raced out to a 2-0 lead in game two with single runs in the first and third innings.
- The Friars responded in the bottom of the third with back-to-back home runs by Lea Kosinski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.). The home runs were the first of the season for both players.
- The Huskies took the lead again on a three-run home run by Lexi Hastings in the top of the fourth inning.
- UConn added some insurance in the sixth inning with four runs to extend the lead to 9-2.
- The Huskies struck for two more runs in the seventh to make it a 11-2 game.
- Riley Quirk added an RBI groundout in the bottom of the seventh to account for the final run of the game.
ON DECK
The Friars will host Stonehill College for a doubleheader Wednesday (March 22) beginning at 2 p.m.
