PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team fell to Connecticut, 6-1, on Friday, March 17 in the Friars' BIG EAST home opener at Glay Field.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS
• The Friars'
Rachael Petrarca collected the only hit of the first inning on a two-out double down the left field line. It marked her fourth double of the season and sixth extra-base hit overall.
• In the bottom of the second
Gabriella Lee recorded her first career hit on a one-out single and stole second. The Friars stranded Lee at second and the game remained scoreless through two innings (0-0).
• The Huskies jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the third with back-to-back RBI singles by Savannah Ring and Makenzie Mason.
• Petrarca laced her second double of the afternoon off the left field fence in the bottom of the third. UConn managed to hold Providence scoreless by producing a pop-up and a strikeout to end the inning.
• Rosie Garcia hit a lead-off double for the Huskies in the top of the fourth and Lexi Hastings drove her in with an RBI-single to give UConn a 3-0 lead.
• Grace Jenkins grounded out to second base to bring home Hastings and extend UConn's lead to 4-0.
• Lee got her second hit of the afternoon, a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth and Morales reached on catcher's interference.
• Morales stole second and Lee stole third and went on to score the Friars' first run on a throwing error by the catcher to make the score 4-1.

Tori Grifone recorded two strikeouts in the top of the fifth to hold the Huskies scoreless.
• UConn had runners at second and third with no outs in the top of the sixth, but Grifone got out of the inning unscathed to keep it a 4-1 game.
• With runners at second and third and just one out in the top of the seventh, Grifone registered her sixth strikeout of the game.
• Grifone walked the next batter to load the bases and gave up a two-run single to Aziah James (6-1).
• The Friars headed to the bottom of the inning facing a five-run deficit.

Julia Renny entered the game as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh and drew a lead-off walk.
Elysia Cunnigan entered the game as a pinch runner and stole second.

Jacque Harrington hit a two-out single to left and Cunnigan advanced to third.

Tiana Wren drew a two-out walk to load the bases, bringing
Emma Douma to the plate for a chance at a rally.
• Douma grounded out to third to end the game.

• The Friars and Huskies will finish off the three-game BIG EAST series with a double header on Saturday, March 18. First pitch is slated for Noon and game two is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
