Friars to Honor Legendary Amby Smith

Veteran Sports Writer to Receive PC's Annual Community Hero Award

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Friars will honor long-time Kent County Times sports writer Amby Smith with the College's Annual Community Hero Award at halftime of the PC-Miami basketball game on Wednesday, February 18th. Tip-off at the Civic Center is set for 7:00 p.m.

The legendary Smith has seen it all on the Rhode Island sports scene covering everything from local high schools to Final Fours and the World Series. Now in his 58th year covering sports, the former sports editor at the Kent County paper continues to write a weekly column for the Times.

He joins past honorees, Brad Faxon, Ben Mondor and the Cranston West Little League team for their contributions on the local Rhode Island sports scene.

A life-long native of Rhode Island, Smith has made West Warwick his home for most of his life. He began his career with the Kent County Times in 1940 and has been a fixture at every major Rhode Island event since then.

The highly popular Smith is a member of six area Hall of Fames: the West Warwick High School Hall of Fame, the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, the CCRI Hall of Fame, the Bryant College Hall of Fame, Words Unlimited and the National High School Football Foundation.

Heavily involved in community service, Smith is an affiliated Christian Brother serving the Ocean Tides School and he's also a long-time volunteer at the Kent County Hospital in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Amby and his wife, Jane, reside in West Warwick.
