Women's Ice Hockey Begins Conference Play With Two Game Home Series
The Providence College women's ice hockey team will host the University of Vermont on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2:00 p.m. Providence goes into the weekend with a 1-3-0 overall record.
Vermont goes into the weekend with a 2-3-0 overall record and a 1-0-0 HE record. The Catamounts added four newcomers to their 2012-13 roster. Leading the team in points is Kiara Myren with eight on three goals and five assists. Brittany Zuback follows with five points on three goals and two assists. Vermont has been outscored 18-12 and outshot 166-131 in its first five games. The Catamounts kicked off their Hockey East play in a game against UNH on Tuesday, Oct. 16, where they defeated the Wildcats, 4-3.
Providence tallied a 0-2-0 record last weekend against No. 9 Mercyhurst. During Friday's match-up, the Friars fell 6-3. The Friars tallied their first goal when senior Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.) fed a pass to freshman Molly Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.), who put the puck past the Laker goaltender to notch her fourth point and second goal of the season. Junior Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.) also notched her fourth point of the season with a goal from the point. Sophomore Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) put senior Emily Groth's (Monona, Wisc.) rebound to the back of the net notching her first goal and point of the season. Freshman Sarah Bryant (Bethlehem, Pa.) finished the night with 33 saves on 38 shots. The Lakers carried their momentum into Saturday's game when they blanked the Friars 5-0. Junior goaltender Nina Riley (Lexington, Mass.) saw 22 shots and made 17 saves.
The Friars head into the two game series with Vermont with an all-time series record of 24-5-0. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 19, 2011 when the Friars blanked the Catamounts 3-0 at Schneider Arena. Providence holds a 15-2-0 record against Vermont at home. The last time the Friars fell to the Catamounts was Oct. 21, 2011, 3-2, while on the road.
After Sunday's game on Oct. 21 the Friars will be hosting Skate with the Friars. Fans are encouraged to bring their family and friends to join the Friars on the ice.
