Providence College Women's Ice Hockey Heads To Erie, Pa. To Take On Mercyhurst

The Providence College women's ice hockey team heads to Erie, Pa. to take on the Mercyhurst Lakers in a two-game series Friday, Oct. 12 (7 p.m.) and Saturday, Oct. 13 (2 p.m.). Providence goes into the weekend with a 1-1-0 record.
Mercyhurst enters the weekend with a 3-0-1 record and has out scored its opponents 21-9. The Lakers have 18 players that have found their names on the score sheet in the first four games, including junior Christine Bestland. Bestland has 10 points on four goals and six assists. Mercyhurst goaltender Stephanie Ciampa owns a 2-0-0 record and has a 1.50 goals against average and a .925 save percentage.
Affer falling 3-2 on Friday, Oct. 5, Providence will enter the weekend coming off a 5-1 win over Bemidji State. The Friars had 10 different players on the score sheet including two freshman. Freshman Molly Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) notched her first collegiate points, including one goal and two assists during the weekend. Illikainen was joined by classmate Lexi Slattery (Lino Lakes, Minn.) on the score sheet. Slattery tallied an assist during Saturday's win. Leading the Friars in scoring is senior Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.), who has three points off two goals and one assist. Senior Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario) tallied two goals in Providence's win over Bemidji, including the game winner. Sophomores Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) and Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.) also notched a goal apiece during the weekend.
The Friars head to Erie, Pa. with an all-time series record of 3-9-0 against the Lakers. The last time the two teams faced off was at the beginning of the 2011-12 season when the Lakers travelled to Providence for a two-game series. The Friars went scoreless in the two-game series and were defeated 5-0 the first game and 3-0 the second.
After returning from Erie, Pa. the Friars will host Vermont on Saturday, Oct. 20 and Sunday, Oct. 21.
