Women's Ice Hockey Hosts Bemidji State In Season Opener

    The Providence College women's ice hockey team opens its season against Bemidji State with a pair of home games on Friday, Oct. 5 (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday, Oct. 6 (4:00 p.m.). Providence goes into the game with an exhibtion match under its belt, while the game will be the first of the season for the Beavers.

    Bemidji ended its 2011-12 season with an 17-17-3 overall record and a non-conference record of 6-0-1. They will return their top two scorers from the 2011-12 season and only lose one forward from 2011-12 going into the 2012-13 season. Bemidji lost its starting goaltender and its three top defenders from a season ago.

    Providence enters the weekend with one of the youngest teams in Hockey East. The Friars welcome eight newcomers, who showed they could hold their own in the team's exhibition match agasint McGill University. Two of the eight found their names on the scoresheet. Freshman Courtney Kukowski (Apple Valley, Minn.) notched the second goal of the game for the Friars with a backhand shot that beat the McGill goaltender upstairs. Freshman Molly Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) notched the game-winning assist for the Friars with a pass to sophmore Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.) during the third period.

    Friday will be the third meeting between the two teams. The Friars hold a 0-1-1 record against the Beavers. The last time the Friars faced Bemidji was at the start of the 2011-12 season in a two-game opening season match off. After tying the first game (0-0), the Friars fell 3-1 in the second. Now sophomore Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) scored the lone goal for the Friars.

    The two-game series will be the last home games before the Friars travel to Erie, Pa. to play Mercyhurst on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 13 at 2:00 p.m.
