Women's Ice Hockey Faces McGill In Season Opener
Sept. 26, 2012
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College women's ice hockey team kicks off the season in an exhibition match against visiting McGill University. The game will take place at Schneider Arena on Saturday, September 29 (7:00 p.m.).
The McGill Martlets finished the 2011-12 season as Quebec League Champions and earned a bronze medal in the CIS Championship. The Martlets have played four exhibition games this season and are on a two-game winning streak entering Saturdays game.
The Friars will be one of the youngest teams in Hockey East this year with 14 freshmen and sophomores. Head Coach Bob Deraney will look to his nine returning upperclassmen to help lead the team. Of the returning players, five were top-ten point getters for the Friars during 2011-12. Junior Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.), who finished fourth on the team in points (26), will help guide the Friar offense with the help of senior Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario), who finished fifth with 18 points. The two will guide a strong freshmen class.
Providence gains two defensemen in a eight person freshmen class. They will join senior Jessica Cohen (Anchorage, Alaska), who made the switch back to defense last season when the team suffered from injuries. Joining Cohen are juniors Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.) and Maggie Pendleton (Woodbury, Minn.), who ranked first and second, respectively, on the team for plus/ minus last season.
Saturday's exhibition against McGill will mark the ninth meeting between the teams. Providence currently holds a 7-1-0 record against the Martlets and defeated them 5-3 in last year's match up. The Friars will open their regular season with a home opener against Bemidji State Friday, October 5 (7:00 p.m) and Saturday, October 6 (4:00 p.m.).
