Former Providence College Alumna Karen Thatcher '06 Invited To U.S. Women's Hockey National Festival

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Former Providence College great, Karen Thatcher '06 was invited to participate at the 2012 U.S. Women's Hockey National Festival held in Blaine, Minn. She was one of 79 players invited to the festival that started August 5 and will continue through until August 19.
The festival will host under-18, under-22 and National Team players. Players will be divided into teams for daily practices and games that started August 6. Of the invitees, 21 of 23 were members of the 2012 U.S. Women's National Team that won silver at the IIHF World Championships. 14 invitees were members of the 2010 U.S Women's Olympic team that won silver in Vancouver.
Thatcher was a standout forward for the Friars women's ice hockey team ranking 10th on the all time scoring list with 167 points in 132 games. After transferring from Brown following her freshman season, she helped lead the Friars to the Hockey East Championship both in 2004 and 2005. In 2005, she was Hockey East Co-Player of the Year and a finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award. During her senior season (2006) she captained the team and was named Second Team All-American. Thatcher also earned All-Academic honors and Hockey East Sportsmanship awards all three seasons with the Friars (2003-2006).
After graduating from Providence, Thatcher participated in five, Four Nations Cups from 2006 to 2011 with the U.S. Women's Hockey National Team. Thatcher was also a member of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team that won silver in Vancouver. During the 2010 Olympic games she tallied six points (3 goals and 3 assists) in five games for the U.S. and finished fourth on the team with a plus/ minus of plus eight. She then returned to her alma mater Providence College to become the assistant coach for the women's ice hockey team for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, helping guide the team to the Hockey East Tournament both seasons.
After the festival, Thatcher will play alongside former Friar Genevieve Lacasse '12 with the Boston Blades in the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL). While playing with the Blades Thatcher will work with the Friars women's ice hockey on a volunteer basis.
