Women's Athletics Ranked Among Top-20 In Capital One Cup Standings

April 30, 2014
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
Capital One Financial Corporation has announced the official winter standings for the Capital One Cup, which is awarded each year to the best men’s and women’s NCAA Division I athletics programs in the country. Providence College is currently tied for 20th in the women’s standings with Clarkson, Oklahoma, Oregon and Sam Houston State.
Providence and Clarkson are the only Division I non-FBS/FCS schools ranked in the top-20. Providence earned 20 points in the Capital One Cup Standings by claiming the 2013 NCAA Women’s Cross Country title. Clarkson, meanwhile, captured the 2014 NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Championship.
Additionally, Providence is the only member of the BIG EAST Conference ranked in the top-20. Butler checks in at No. 34 (10 pts), while Georgetown is currently tied for 50th (6 pts).
Points toward the Capital One Cup are earned and tracked throughout the year based on final standings of NCAA Championships and final official coaches’ polls. One winning men’s and one winning women’s program will be crowned after the completion of the final NCAA spring championships. Capital One will award a combined $400,000 in student-athlete scholarships and the Capital One Cup trophy to the winning schools at the ESPY awards in July.
