Feb. 24, 2017

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Athletics and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) recently held a two-day series called Financial Foundations 101 for all its student-athletes.  Morgan Stanley Wealth Management-Global Sports & Entertainment division hosted the seminar.

Former NBA player Antoine Walker and Aaron Harding, a financial planner with PricewaterhouseCoopers were the two presenters.  The workshop focused on building a strong financial foundation and wealth whether you are going to be a professional athlete or coming out of college for your first full time job.

The financial pyramid was reviewed in detail with guidance on making, protecting, saving and growing your money.  In addition, a good portion of time was spent on maintaining good credit and why your credit score matters in the future when you buy your first car out of college, mortgage rate-ability to rent or buy a home and, credit card approvals.

“I thought that the workshop was incredibly beneficial and introduced us to the importance of personal finance-a topic many of us have never thought about until now said Taylor Huntly ’17 a senior on the softball team.   It was fun, engaging and really caught the interest of our student-athletes.”

Student-athletes were asked to participate in acting out real-life scenarios with Antoine Walker to review the material that was presented.  Topics included a financial trivia competition among the Women’s Basketball and Lacrosse teams as well as receiving $100 million in fake cash to see how spending decisions affected monthly and annual income.
