On Saturday, January 23, a special jersey retirement ceremony was held for former Friar greats Kathy Finn Hill and the late Helen Bert during halftime of the women’s basketball game against Pittsburgh. The family of the late Helen Bert, Kathy Finn Hill, her family and what seemed to be the entire town of Mansfield, Mass. (Finn Hill’s hometown) were all in attendance. It was great to see such strong support for our former student-athlete and senior women’s administrator, as it made the celebration that much more fun. Congratulations to these inspirational women on their achievements in the world of PC athletics.
On Sunday, January 17, the recently completed Friends of Friar room was dedicated to Bill & Emily Leary for their generous support of Friar Athletics before the start of the women’s hockey game against New Hampshire. The men held a similar event during their game versus New Hampshire on Friday, January 22. In the men’s ceremony, the Robert J. O’Connor Research Library was officially opened in a room adjacent to the Friends of Friar room. I am proud to say that the research library is truly amazing, capturing the history of the sport of hockey through books, magazines, videos and photos alike. The room is open to the general public during PC hockey home games.
Tonight the men’s basketball team will take on No. 19 UConn in BIG EAST action. I invite all Friar Fans to come and support the team as they look to defeat the Huskies. The athletics department will be collecting money for the Haiti Relief effort. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti who are going through this catastrophic event.
The women’s ice hockey program will be honored at tonight’s game for reaching the 600-win mark. In addition, head coach Bob Deraney will be honored for reaching the 200-win milestone at PC. That’s all for now here in Friartown!
